A bustling area until the 60′s, racism, desegregation, and white flight created a wasteland of Birmingham’s downtown area. Business moved or failed. Historic hotels and buildings were boarded up, and until ten years ago, sadness tinted the voices of those that remembered how downtown used to be. Yet something has been happening in the past ten years. Bars have moved in. Lofts have been built. Buildings renovated. New and creative business, like Urban Standard, have been started and are thriving.
El Barrio is one of those places. The decor is hand-crafted and stunning. The menu is modern. The nachos were, without any debate, the best I’ve had. Go there, be in awe.
